Kristy the Celebrity

So, I've started going to the different schools in the area and having lunch with the kids. Still havn't been abele to nail down a time to meet with the teens in Asheville, but that will come. Once they realize I'm not going to show up in the 15 passenger army van in my uniform they'll be okay. lol. Anyone who knows me, knows how intimidated I am by teens. And they're just as uncomfortable as I am and looking for approval probably more than I am, but it's hard to remember that. All that said, progress is being made. Believe it or not. Maybe lunchtime at their school is not the best way to get with them. I find they enjoy it much more when you take them out for lunch and it's one on one and they don't have to prove themselves to anyone, they can just be themselves. It's tough being a teenager.

So I've been going to lunch at the elementary school so far. And man, it's a good feeling when you walk into an elementary school lunchroom and there's all these kids waving their hands in the air yelling "Over here! Come sit with me today!"
If I can't get approval from the teens, I certainly feel it from the elementary school kids.
You meet a lot of kids when you go to lunch. Like yesterday, I was sitting with a girl I had met the week before who was friends with a kid I knew.

Things you can pray for:
I also met another girl names Ashley. Her mom is having a baby, a girl, in October, so pray for her mom. I think she said October 3rd.
Sarah's mom can't pay the money to let her come back to the afterschool program. Pray somehow the money will get there.
Tregg's birthday was this week. He got a motorcycle. Pray for his safety!
Delaney and Robyn both have birthday's this week. Pray they will have a wonderful day.
Jake couldn't find his lunch tray. I don't know if he ever did. Pray for those who have lost more than a lunch tray.
Andrew and Matthew are best friends. But sometimes (as they tell me) they fight. But then they make up and they're friends again. But don't worry, it only happens like once every two months. Pray for those who don't have best friends.
Tyshika's and Leann's grandmother is a wonderful lady. She picks them up each day. Pray for her strength to do what she does.
Terri is the director of the afterschool program. Pray for her endurance!
Christine is Terri's assistant. She's in college. Pray for her studies and work.

Have a wonderful day. And if you have the opportunity to make someone feel like a celebrity, be it calling them to sit with you at the table, or clapping when they come into the room, or telling them how thankful you are they have come into your presence today - do it. It will make them feel like a star.

I think I laugh every time I think about Miss Kathy at Circle of Friends. That was such a funny time. Marcus and the hooligans! I appreciated you being there and for hanging in.

They still talk about Circle of Friends too...

Eating lunch at school with kids is awesome... every kid sitting at your table leaves lunch in a better mood for the rest of the day because a "special adult" ate lunch at THEIR table.

Yeah, it starts to change when kids get into Middle school and high school. I found that the middle schoolers didn't mind it so much if you brought them lunch from McDonald's or somewhere... because then they were cool to all their friends because they didn't have to eat yucky school food. But I didn't even venture to try for high schoolers. I think your idea about going out to eat somewhere is a good idea.

It sounds as though you have been busy... and it sounds as though your prayer list is getting to be a mile long! Pretty soon you will have to go to bed at 8pm just to have enough time to pray for all the kids you are meeting! :)

The relationships that you are building mean so much to those kids and will change lives!

    Thank you!

Oh... and thank you for listing other people who blog on your blog! Now I just go down your list because I am too unmotivated to make my own.

Aw, MARCUS! I miss that little guy. He kept me sane in the midst of my rebellious bunch. I appreciated only having like 4 people in my group that I could barely control, where as Stephanie had 30 and she led them like a Shepherd. Always stood amazed at you too ladies...God Bless you!
